Independent Women tells the story of how East Timorese women activists mobilised against a patriarchal society and claimed their right to participate in their new independent and democratic nation.

It looks at the challenges now facing the East Timorese women's movement and draws upon case studies from Mozambique, Namibia and Cambodia for comparison and lessons.
